Henry James's record of six weeks spent in provincial France in 1882, written for the Atlantic and published with illustrations two years later. Forty short chapters move from Tours and the chateaux of the Loire south to Provence and Carcassonne, weighing each town's churches, inns and Roman remains against the Paris he had left behind.
