A short story set on 22 January 1793, the day after the execution of Louis XVI, in which an elderly nun climbing a Paris street realises she is being followed. The stranger brings flour for the secret Mass she and two other refugees are keeping, and returns a year later to explain who he is. Translated by Clara Bell and others.
