Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert send for an orphan boy to help on their Prince Edward Island farm and are sent Anne Shirley instead, a talkative red-haired girl of eleven. Over five years she wins over Avonlea, feuds with Gilbert Blythe, breaks a slate over his head, and grows into a scholar who must choose between college and home.
