Donal Grant

1883

MacDonald's 1883 novel, a sequel of sorts to Sir Gibbie. Donal Grant, a shepherd turned scholar, walks out of his glen after a disappointment in love and takes a tutor's post at Castle Graham, where the earl keeps to his room, a door has been plastered over, and a passage in the wall carries music no one will explain. Eighty-four chapters, much of the dialogue in Scots.
