Hermann and Dorothea

1797

Goethe's 1797 idyll in hexameters, translated by Ellen Frothingham. A young innkeeper's son sent to carry food and clothes to a column of refugees driven west by the French wars meets Dorothea among them, and comes home meaning to marry her before he has learned her name or she has any idea of his. Nine cantos, each named for a Muse.
