Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things
1904
Lafcadio Hearn's 1904 collection of Japanese ghost stories, most of them retold from old Japanese books. Seventeen tales, among them Hoichi the Earless, the snow-woman Yuki-Onna, the faceless Mujina and the severed heads of Rokuro-Kubi, followed by three long naturalist essays on butterflies, mosquitoes and ants. A publisher's introduction from 1904 opens the book and Hearn's own notes close it.
