Stendhal's 1830 novel in the original French, following Julien Sorel, a carpenter's son from Verrieres who reads Napoleon in secret and climbs through the church and the salons of Restoration France. The first volume is the provinces and Madame de Renal, the second is Paris and Mathilde de la Mole.
