Blackmore's Exmoor romance, told by the farmer John Ridd, whose father was killed by the Doones and who grows up loving a girl raised among them. Seventy-five chapters carry the story through the winter of 1683 and the Monmouth rebellion, in a West Country voice Blackmore built from the speech of his own parish.
