Hawthorne's 1846 collection, written in the Concord parsonage he describes in the opening sketch. Twenty-six pieces, among them Young Goodman Brown, Rappaccini's Daughter, The Birthmark, The Celestial Railroad and Feathertop, mixing allegory and New England sketch. The title essay walks the reader round the manse, its orchard and the river before the tales begin.
