Dickens's second novel, serialised from 1837, following a workhouse orphan from the parish board to a London thieves' den. Oliver falls in with Fagin, the Artful Dodger, Bill Sikes and Nancy, and the book turns the machinery of the new Poor Law into a story that readers could not put down.
