Phantastes: A Faerie Romance for Men and Women
1858
MacDonald's first prose work, published in 1858. On the morning after his twenty-first birthday Anodos finds his bedroom turning into a forest, and spends twenty-one days wandering Fairy Land, where trees have tempers, a shadow attaches itself to him, and a marble woman he sings awake keeps escaping him. This is the 1905 edition his son Greville prepared, with Greville's preface and the long inset story of Cosmo von Wehrstahl at chapter 13.
