Defoe's 1719 narrative of a Yorkshireman shipwrecked alone on an island near the Orinoco, where he stays twenty-eight years. Crusoe builds, plants, keeps a journal and a calendar, finds a footprint in the sand, and eventually takes the ship back from mutineers.
