Lawrence's third novel, drawn closely on his own childhood in the Nottinghamshire coalfield. Gertrude Morel, married to a miner she has come to despise, fixes her ambition on her sons, and Paul grows up unable to give himself to Miriam or to Clara while his mother is alive.
