The Ballad of the White Horse

Chesterton's long poem on Alfred the Great and the Danish wars, published in 1911 and running to eight books. It moves from the vision of the Virgin in the marshes of Athelney through the battle of Ethandune to the scouring of the chalk horse, and Chesterton says plainly in his note that it is legend, not history.
