Giraldus Cambrensis wrote this survey of the Welsh in 1194, after travelling the country preaching the Third Crusade, in Thomas Forester's translation. The first book praises Welsh hospitality, music and quickness of speech; the second explains, with equal confidence, how the country could be conquered and how it could resist.
