Dante's journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise in Longfellow's translation, the first by an American: a hundred cantos from the dark wood to the vision of the celestial rose, with Virgil and then Beatrice as guides. Completed by Dante around 1320; Longfellow's version appeared in 1867.
