Marie Belloc Lowndes's 1913 novel, written out of the Whitechapel murders. The Buntings take in a quiet, well-spoken lodger just as a series of killings begins in the streets around them, and the book stays with Mrs Bunting as she works out what she has understood and decides to say nothing.
