Goethe's shorter poems in Edgar Alfred Bowring's complete verse translation of 1853, arranged as Goethe grouped them: songs, ballads, cantatas, odes, sonnets, epigrams and the West-Eastern Divan. Bowring keeps the original metres throughout, which is what made this the standard English Goethe for a generation.
